PURPOSE:To realize the control of the starting and the ending of image read with a photo sensor such as a CCD by marking a reference scale on an original placing table and reading the range of a sub-scanning direction among a read range through the reference scale. CONSTITUTION:The scale 14a becoming a reference is marked at an equal intervals in the sub-scanning direction, that means, along the longitudinal direction on the original placing table 14 and the reference scale 14a marked the original placing table 4 is read by the photo sensor 36. Data on the read range of an original image of the read reference scale 14a is introduced to a binarization circuit 28a and encoded and after that, it is introduced to a counter 28b. Then when the read of an original 12 is started, a CPU 28c monitors the number of output count concerning with the reference scale 14a of the counter 28b and introduces an A/D conversion starting signal to the control terminal of an A/D converter 28e when the number of the output count reaches at a prescribed count value and operates the A/D converter 28e. After that, the image signal is started to be introduced to the A/D converter 28e from the photo sensor 36.
