Efficient subpage locking occurs in a write-ahead logging, transaction-oriented system through the use of compensation log records and REDO processing before UNDO processing on all RESTART operations. By appropriately backchaining compensation log records, then UNDO operations associated with system restart can be minimized by skipping over and repeating previous UNDO operations.
