PURPOSE:To make such a circuit breaker that is excellent in high voltage breaking capacity securable by having an arcing horn and an intermediate electrode opposed to each other so as to cause at least a part of both at time of opening the electrode to become almost paralleled. CONSTITUTION:With the dissociation between a fixed contact 3 and a travelling contact 4, there is produced an arc between both these contacts 3 and 4. Since high-pressure metallic vapor is spouted in the almost vertical direction from a leg of the arc shifted to the opposed surface 10 of an arcing horn 9, conductivity between both opposed surfaces 10 and 12 comes high, whereby the arc quickly shifts to an arc between the opposed surface 10 of the arcing horn 9 and the opposed surface 11 of an intermediate electrode 11 to be parallelly opposed and an arc between a topmost grid 13 and an arc runner 14. And, since each conductive route of the arcing horn 9 and the intermediate electrode 11 is almost parallel with each other and each direction of a current is reverse, the arc is magnetically driven so effectively in each tip direction of the arcing horn 9 and the intermediate electrode 11, thus it generates high arc voltage. With this constitution, such a circuit breaker that has excellent high voltage breaking capacity is securable.
