PURPOSE:To simplify the structure of a system and to detect a current position with high accuracy by measuring the traveling distance and azimuth of a vehicle, calculating a traveling track from their integral values, and finding their correlation with a digitized road map. CONSTITUTION:This system consists of a current position estimating device which inputs a characteristic position detection signal outputted by a receiver 8, a map memory 30 stored with map road map data and installation position data on a vehicle sensor 5, etc. A specific ultrasonic wave signal is sent continuously out of the sensor 5 installed at a specific position in a road traffic network, so when the vehicle 1 travels nearby it, its on-vehicle receiver 8 receives the signal, calculates the distance and azimuth between signal reception points to select the installation position of a sensor 5 which is most similar among the distances and azimuths of sensors 5 stored in the memory 30 previously, and detects the current position of the vehicle 1 according to the position. Then an estimated current value is calibrated according to the detected current position and while the estimated current position is detected at all times according to the integral values of the traveling distance and traveling azimuth, the traveling of the vehicle is carried on. |
