PURPOSE:To make inertia of only the top part of a steel stock large and to improve traveling of the stock on a runout table by widening a roll gap at rear stands of a tandem rolling mill and bringing the gap after passing of the top part to a set value. CONSTITUTION:A roll gap at rear stands F6, F7 in stands F1-F7 of a tandem rolling mill 1 is initially set to a large value to roll a steel sheet 2. After the top part of the sheet 2 passes through the stands F6, F7, the gap is set to a prescribed set value and the rolling is continued. The sheet 2 is hardly affected by influences of air or contacting bodies, so that traveling of the sheet 2 on a runout table 3 is comparatively stable because the top part is thick and has a large material inertia.
