PURPOSE:To attain consecutive readout of each track quickly by formatting a disk while the start position of the 1st sector of each track is shifted by each interval corresponding to the access time required for a magnetic head to move between tracks in one direction. CONSTITUTION:When a CPU 13 starts formatting, a spindle motor 17 dives a floppy disk 7 to move a magnetic head 5 to a position of an outermost circumferential track 8a. When an index detector 18 detects an index mark 9, formatting is applied after a waiting time represented by TXN. N is equal to 0 at the track 8a and the formatting is started immediately when the mark 9 is detected and a gap 10 corresponding to the rotary angle (a) of the disk 7 is provided after the final sector and the formatting is finished. The formatting is started after a detection time T of the mark 9 for the next track 8b and the sum of the disk rotary angle (b) and rotary angle (a) corresponds to the time to restart the readout when the head 5 moves to an adjacent track.
