PURPOSE:To improve the compression rate by separating a digital color picture data into a shape data and color information of an area surrounded by the data and compressing the information quantity of data. CONSTITUTION:A picture is divided into areas S1-Sn and colors are assigned to them. If the (n) is nearly 4000, the picture is regarded to be sufficiently of high quality. Moreover, the sectional lines of S1-Sn represent the shape of the picture. That is, the picture data is divided into the shape data and the color data of the areas surrounded by the shape data. The picture data is searched in lateral and longitudinal directions to compare whether or not the color is the same color in a predetermined noise margin and when the same color, bit 0 is set and in case of not the same color, bit 1 is set. Thus, the shape data is expressed by 1 picture element (i)-bit. The color data of the sectioned area is further combined into adjacent areas and coloring is applied an 2-dimensional area.
