PURPOSE:To improve operation efficiency on the whole by preceding the sticking process of a pattern template to a stone material and a character engraving process by the process of giving a pattern and a pattern template forming process at the time of forming characters and patterns on the stone material of a tombstone, etc. CONSTITUTION:The pattern forming method of a stone material consists of a process 11 for giving a pattern, a pattern template forming process 15, a sticking process 17 and a character engraving process 18. The process 11 for giving a pattern is a process for giving patterns 6 such as characters, figures, etc. to a pattern forming elementary plate 12 which is formed by superposedly sticking two sheets or plate members. The pattern template forming process 15 is a process for cutting off a pattern piece 6' with a cutter knife 8, etc. along the form edge 6a of the pattern 6 of the pattern forming elementary plate 12 to form a pattern template 16. The sticking process 17 is a process for sticking the pattern template 16 to the outer surface of a stone material 2. And, the character engraving process 18 is a process for splashing a powder type silicon carbide grinding material with a grinder 10 on a cut-off part 6b cut off on the pattern template 16 to engrave the pattern on the outer face of the stone material 2. After that, the pattern template 16 is removed from the stone material 2.
