PURPOSE:To print a variety of superimposed writing styles through simple operating without a large amount of ROM's such as a character generator and a logic circuit by storing a printing start position. CONSTITUTION:When document information is input, the content is stored into a character information storage area of RAM3. Then a printing head 2a and a platen 2c are caused to move by designation of a printing start position through a printing start position designating key 1b, and the designated position is stored into a printing start position storage area 3b of RAM3. Next, once printing is designated, the content of the printing is sequentially read and output to a printing element 2d of the printing head 2b. When the printing ends, the printing start position is read to cause the head 2b and the platen 2c to return to the printing start position. When superimposed printing is performed, the head 2b and the platen 2c are caused to move by the amount of superimposition of desired styles of writing, and printing of the same styles as or different ones from the previous printing is commanded for printing of superimposition styles of writing.
