PURPOSE:To improve the separation by applying synchronizing detection to a color signal superimposed onto a color composite signal through orthogonal modulation so as to demodulate and subtracting a composite signal demodulated from the color signal so as to separate a luminance signal. CONSTITUTION:A color signal demodulated by an orthogonal demodulator 34 is shifted by a frequency shift circuit 36, the signal is restored into the same frequency and phase of the color signal of the color composite video signal and the frequency versus level characteristic of the color signal is corrected to the same as the color signal of the composite signal by a frequency characteristic correction circuit 37. The corrected color signal is fed to other input terminal of a subtractor 35, a color signal component is eliminated from the composite signal and only the luminance signal including the synchronizing signal is obtained. Thus, the separation is not lowered in the pattern and moving picture with less vertical correlation and the device is inexpensive.
