Brominated butyl rubber is prepared by treating the copolymer dissolved in a C5 to C7 virgin naphtha fraction having a bromine number of less than 0.2, with bromine at a temperature of from - 30 DEG to 100 DEG C. until the copolymer contains at least 0.5 wt. per cent and not more than three combined atoms of bromine per double bond in the copolymer, the ratio between the solvent and dissolved copolymer being between 20 to 90 : 80-1 wt. per cent respectively. The bromine may be used as a gas, a liquid or dissolved in an inert liquid solvent, at a temperature of from 20 DEG to 70 DEG C. The olefines in the solvent may be removed by fractionation, by treatment with aluminium chloride, or by hydrogenation. The brominated rubber, together with conventional additives, may be used to coat tire cords, and fabrics coated with phenol-aldehyde resin which are then dried, embedded in unvulcanized rubbers natural and synthetic and vulcanized. The products are suitable for tyres, conveyer belts, curing bags, and hose. |
