The catalyst for olefin polymerization comprises a solid catalyst component and an organometallic compd.. The solid catalyst component is obtd. by contacting and reacting (a) a silicon oxide or an aluminium oxide, (b) a magnesium halide, (c) a compd. Me(OR)nXz-n [Me=element of I-IV gps. in the periodic table; z=valence of Me; o<n<=z; X=halogen; R=C1-20 hydrocarbon . (d) a titanium compd. or vanadium compd., and (e) a compd. Rn"Si(OR')mX4-m-n [R'=R"=C1-24 hydrocarbon; X=halogene; o<=n<4; o<m+n<=4 or a polysiloxane. The catalyst affords olefin polymers having a high bulk density, a large ave. particle size, a narrow size distribution and a small amont. of a fine particulate portion.
