PURPOSE:To measure transmission characteristics and structural parameters at the same time, by providing an illuminating means from the direction, which is perpendicular to the optical axis of an optical fiber to be measured. CONSTITUTION:Light from a light source 2 passes through a dummy fiber 3. A propagating mode is made to be a steady state mode. The light is inputted into an optical fiber 1 to be measured and attenuated based on transmission characteristics. The light is inputted into a photodetector 5. The amount of the incident light and the amount of the output light are compared, and a transmission loss can be measured. The path of illuminating light from an illuminating light source 8 is determined on the basis of the structural parameters of the fiber 1. The illuminating light is inputted into a facing imaging device 9. The imaging device 9 generates an image signal corresponding to the image forming pattern of the illuminating light. The signal is supplied to an image receiving device and the image is displayed. Then the structural parameters of the optical fiber are measured. In this way, the transmission characteristics and the structural parameters can be measured at the same time without cutting the optical fiber. |
