PURPOSE:To produce, with industrial advantage, the title compound of high purity which is used as a starting material for polyester in high yield in a shortened time, by oxidizing a dialkyl-substituted diaryl compound in an organic solvent with an molecular oxygen in the presence of a specific catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A dialkyl-substituted diaryl compound of formula I (A is a direct bond, -O-, -SO2-, -CO-, -CH2-, formula II, formula III, formula IV, formula V; R<1>, R<2> are 1-20C alkyl) is oxidized in an organic solvent such as acetic acid in the presence of a catalyst consisting of 3 components, Co, Br2 or Br2 and Cl2 and at least one of heavy metal selected from atomic numbers of 23-26, 39-51 and 57-84 such as Mn, Ce or Zr, using molecular oxygen at 80-250 deg.C and 0.1-10 atmospheric pressure to give the subject compound of formula IV (A' is the same one as A except -CH2-). |
