PURPOSE:To enable feeding of paper pipe associated with residual string as well as hollow paper pipe by providing a means for detecting a paper pipe associated with residual string and contained in a stacker and blocking thread guarding then guiding thread ends at the side of the paper pipe associated with residual string and at the side of string feed bobbin to an ending means. CONSTITUTION:When a winding unit 1 operates to wind string fully over a package 16, winding is stopped and a doffing truck 2 moves to carry out doffing. At this time, a detector 41 detects whether a new paper pipe 10 contained in a stocker 36 to be fed to a cradle arm 11 is associated with residual string. If the new paper pipe 10 is a hollow pipe 10, doffing is carried out normally. Upon detection of a paper pipe 10 associated with residual string, doffing is not carried out for that paper pipe 10 but ending of string end of that paper pipe 10 and string end at the side of a string feed bobbin 8 is carried out by means of an ending device 24. Consequently, string from the string feed bobbin 8 is wound continuously to the residual string over the paper pipe associated with residual string.
