PURPOSE:To allow a character recognition device to select and display a correct character pattern by sending table list information representing which character code a character generator of the host side uses. CONSTITUTION:When a character generator 16 is based on the JIS code table, '0' is stored and when the generator 16 is based on a specific code table, '1' is stored in a host side memory 19 as code information, and the information is sent to a character recognition device 1 at the depression of a recognition key 20. When code table information of a candidate character selected by the recognition is '0', a recognition section 7 selects a character code memory 21 based on the JIS code table and when the code table information is '1', the section 7 selects a character code memory 22 based on the specific code table. Thus, the correct character pattern of the candidate character selected by the recognition is displayed on a display screen 14.
