PURPOSE:To obtain an aminoglycoside antibiotic substance, istamycin A or istamycin B, exhibiting strong antibacterial action against various kinds of bacteria and having low toxicity, by culturing an actinomycete SS-939 strain separated from earth collected from sea bottom. CONSTITUTION:Streptomyces tenjimariensis SS-939 is a strain obtained by culturing earth collected from the sea bottom of the coast of Miura peninsula in an MY medium containing kanamycin and screening the obtained flora of actinomycete. The SS-939 strain (FERM P-4932) is inoculated in a medium containing nutrient sources such as nitrogen source (e.g. soybean flour), a carbon source (e.g. glucose and starch) and, as necessary, inorganic salts (e.g. sodium chloride), etc., and proliferated under aerobic condition to obtain a culture liquid containing istamycin. The liquid is adsorbed to and eluted from a cation exchange resin to obtain istamycin A and istamycin B. Both substances have strong activity to inhibit the growth of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial. Accordingly, the substance can be utilized as an antibiotic substance for the remedy of bacteriosis. |
