The bottle filling machine has a vertical pipe (9) at each filling position. A pipe is inserted into the neck of a bottle, and being free from internal restrictions allows free flow of liquid into the bottle. A shaft (11) extends axially down the pipe, and has a shut-off block (12) at its lower end. The shaft may be raised or lowered by a pneumatic or hydraulic device. At the start of the filling cycle the block is lowered opening the pipe, and then when the liquid is detected in contact with the block, an electronic control circuit initiates its withdrawal.
