PURPOSE:To prevent the reduction in the engine brake action, when a downhill coasting condition of a vehicle is detected, by stopping the changeover of gear stage to a higher speed side to be carried out on the basis of a speed change diagram by a stopping means. CONSTITUTION:When a vehicle is in an accelerating or a steady running condition although the operating amount of an accelerator is zero, based on the signal from in accelerator nonoperation detecting switch 41 and the signal from an output shaft revolution sensor 52, the CPU 66 in a control unit 16 judges that the vehicle is in a downhill coasting running condition. In this downhill coasting running condition, although the vehicle speed increases to become in such a condition that a higher speed side gear stage than that at present is requested, the CPU 66, in this condition, fixes the target gear stage to the present gear stage, and prevents the changeover to a higher speed side gear stage. Thus, at the time of downhill coasting running, the reduction in the engine brake action attributable to the changeover to a higher speed side gear stage can be prevented. |
