Thermally stable fibres

Fibres of the group of thermally stabilised polyacrylonitrile fibres and carbon fibres are predominantly used as asbestos substitute and for reinforcing synthetic resins. The fibres have been coated with a size which facilitates the processing of the brittle fibres, but also restricts their utility. Fibres of the group of thermally stabilised polyacrylonitrile fibres and carbon fibres are coated with a size containing a copolymer prepared from perfluorinated organic compounds. Fibre assemblies formed from the coated fibres do not agglomerate and composite structures containing the fibres have a comparatively high impact toughness and are unharmed by atmospheric moisture. Use for fibre-reinforced structures, particularly for friction linings.
