A weight counterbalance device for the roll-front of a piece of box-type furniture has a winding element which is connected to an energy store and which winding element is connected to the roll-front via a rope, band or the like. The winding element has a winding radius which changes as a function of the restoring force to be generated. Such a weight counterbalance device is suitable for downward-opening roll-fronts, in the case of which the smallest restoring force is required in the open position, where the prestressing of the energy store is greatest.
