PURPOSE:To prevent a damping phenomenon of a belt by providing a cam mechanism including a compression spring in the interior of a tensioner. CONSTITUTION:A tensioner shaft S1 is inserted in a cylindrical case 1 fixed to a bracket 2, and a tension arm 5 having an idler pulley 6 at the forward end thereof, which is integral with a stopper 9 of a torsion spring 8 is rotatably mounted on the other end portion of the shaft S1. A cam mechanism comprising the first cam piece C1 integral with the tension arm 5 and the second cam piece C2 which is engaged with the first cam piece C1 by an inclined surface and a projection and capable of moving in the axial direction is disposed in the inner periphery of the torsion spring 8 in engagement with the tensioner shaft S1. A compression spring 15 is interposed, with the respective end portions engaged, between the second cam piece C2 and the cylindrical case 1.
