PURPOSE:To economically obtain the titled compound in high yield and reduced amount of a polymer by-product, by dehydrating p-aminophenetyl alcohol with an alkali metal hydroxide in the presence of a specific compound used as a polymerization inhibitor. CONSTITUTION:p-Aminophenetyl alcohol which is a raw material subjected to dehydration reaction in the presence of p-phenylenediamines expressed by formula I (R<1>, R<2> and R<3> are H, alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl) and/or 2,2,6,6- tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxyls used as polymerization inhibitors at >=200 deg.C, preferably 220-300 deg.C to provide the aimed compound. The above-mentioned polymerization inhibitor is preferably used in the range of 0.01-20mol.%, especially 0.05-10mol.% based the above-mentioned raw material and the above- mentioned alkali is preferably used in the range of 0.5-20mol.% based on the raw material.
