PURPOSE:To selectively produce parahydroxymethylphenol useful as an intermediate reaction product for novolak polymer, by using crystalline aluminosilicate as a catalyst and reacting phenol with formaldehyde. CONSTITUTION:Phenol is reacted with formaldehyde (a compound such as paraformaldehyde, trioxan or tetraoxan to provide formaldehyde under reaction condition can be used) by using zeolite (mordenite, faujasite Y type zeolite or X type zeolite and conversion of the zeolite to H<+> type is required before reaction) as a catalyst to give parahydroxymethylphenol. The amount of the catalyst zeolite used is preferably 0.1-1pt.wt. based on 1pt.wt. formaldehyde in the case of batch system. The catalyst can be reused and reactivated by washing followed by burning. |
