Wheel drives for commercial vehicles which, by using a hydrostatic-mechanical split torque transmission, at constant load permit a stepless adjustment of the speed of travel, have hitherto needed too much space to be capable of being accommodated in commercial vehicles, which in their design construction are characterised by a conventional multi-stage shift transmission with a plurality of shift stages. In order to be able to accommodate a wheel drive, which permits stepless adjustment of the speed of travel, despite the limited space available, a multi-stage shift transmission (5), arranged on the output side of the hydrostatic-mechanical transmission, is designed with a stage increment in the order of approx. @ = 1.5, hydrostatic units of limited performance are used and the working speed of the hydrostatic units has a lower limit in the drive ranges IV to VI lying completely above the slip limit R. The overall volume of the hydrostatic units and hence the entire wheel drive can thereby be kept sufficiently small. <IMAGE>
