The invention relates to a method for transmitting an audio signal in a television signal, which contains in a predetermined frequency band a picture signal modulated onto a picture carrier oscillation and, at the high-frequency edge of the frequency band at least one analog audio signal (analog sound) in each case modulated onto a (first) audio carrier oscillation, preferably in accordance with the PAL or SECAM standard. To provide a gradual introduction of a digitally encoded audio signal into the television signal on the basis of this, at least one further audio carrier oscillation (digital audio (DT)), which is modulated with in each case one digitally encoded audio signal, is transmitted simultaneously in a region of the frequency band, the frequency of which is below the analog audio (1.TT mono, 1.TT stereo) and in which a predominantly low picture signal amplitude prevails, the amplitude of which further audio carrier oscillation is lower by a predetermined measure than that of the picture carrier oscillation (BT). <IMAGE>
