PURPOSE:To obtain an element which is capable of forming a picture of good quality with a high driving property by using a radiant ray absorbing layer as a heating element, in a display element which utilizes an optical physical property variation of a liquid layer generated by heating inagewise a light transmittable liquid layer. CONSTITUTION:A heating element 1, a liquid layer 2 and a transparent protective plate 3 are laminated on a substrate 5, and a picture is displayed by using an optical physical property variation generated in a liquid layer heating part 13 by being heated by a heating part 1a of the heating element 1, and modulating incident light 4. In said display element, a radiant ray absorbing layer 6 obtained by forming a film of various inorganic or organic materials is used as the heating element 1, and it is heated selectively by radiant rays 6a irradiated imagewise (a symbol 7 denotes a lattice which shields incident light 4 at the usual time, and transmits it when the heating part 13 is generated in the liquid layer). |
