PURPOSE:To easily obtain the titled compound useful as a gastric inhibitory agent, in high yield, by reacting N-cyano-N' methyl-N''-[2-(butane-2,3-dionyl) thioethyl]guanidine with a carboxylic acid ammonium salt and formaldehyde. CONSTITUTION:N-cyano-N'-methyl-N''-[2-( 5-methyl-4-imidazolylmethylthio )eth yl]guanidine of formula can be produced by reacting N-cyano-N'-methyl- N''-[2-(butane-2,3-dionyl)thioethyl]guanidine with a carboxylic acid ammonium salt and formaldehyde (preferably formalin, paraformaldehyde, etc.). The reaction is carried out in a solvent such as methanol or ethanol usually at -10-150 deg.C, preferably 15-120 deg.C.
