PURPOSE:To achieve a higher shielding effect with a reduction in troubles, by a method wherein a radiation shielding body is supported on a shaft in contact with an object to be measured in such a manner as to rotate freely and a radiation source is arranged on one side while a detector on the other side. CONSTITUTION:A radiation shielding body 3 is supported on a support shaft 1 mounted on a running body at the right angle to the direction of traveling in contact with an object to be measured, for example, subsoil 3 and in such a manner as to rotate freely and a radiation source 4 is mounted on one side 3 while a detector 5 on the other side. As composed of a plurality of units 31, 31 and 31, the radiation shielding body 3 fits well to a ruggedness of the subsoil 2 to eliminate variations in a shielding effect owing to the ruggedness. Then, as the running body runs, the radiation shielding body 3 turns, thereby enabling continuous measurement of a degree of compaction, namely, density at points of the subsoil 2 at a high accuracy with the detector 5.
