PURPOSE:To easily refine copper at low cost by melting pure copper in an inert gas or in a vacuum and sweeping the surface of the obtd. molten metal by an electric arc in the inert gas, thereby effectively removing inevitable impurities. CONSTITUTION:The copper ground metal having about >=99.993% purity is melted in the inert gas such as Ar, etc., or in the vacuum to form the molten metal. The electric arc generated from a discharge electrode is then projected on the surface of said molten metal to sweep the same in the inert gas. At this time, electromagnetic stirring of the molten metal is simultaneously executed at need. By this method, the surface temp. of the molten metal is increased to the high temp. of about 2,000-2,500 deg.C and the impure elements easy to evaporate such as Bi, As, Sb, Ps, Zn, O, S, etc., are evaporated away. The molten metal is thereafter solidified, by which high pure copper is obtd.
