PURPOSE:To provide an amorphous refractory material composed of refractory particle consisting of monoclinic ZrO2 particle containing glassy phase and ZrB2 particle and a binder containing alumina cement, having excellent corrosion resistance and impregnation resistance and useful for various furnaces for steel and non-ferrous material. CONSTITUTION:A ZrO2 raw material is mixed with a raw material containing 3-7wt.% glass-forming P2O5, 2-5wt.% of Na2O, 12-20wt.% of Al2O3 and remaining part of SiO2 and the mixture is melted. The obtained powder is mixed with ZrB2 particles to obtain a refractory particle (A) having a particle diameter of 20mm-20mum, composed of (B) 5-95wt.% of monoclinic ZrO2 particle containing 25-3wt.% of surrounding glassy phase and (C) 95-5wt.% of ZrB2 particle and containing the components B and C in a total amount of >=80wt.%. The objective amorphous refractory containing >=50wt.% of monoclinic ZrO2 particle or >=50wt.% of ZrB2 particle can be produced by mixing 85-99wt.% of the component A with 15-1wt.% of a binder containing 30-100wt.% of alumina cement and fine SiO2 particle, etc., of <=10mum in diameter and kneading and drying the mixture.
