PURPOSE:To eliminate the waste of a color ink ribbon and to raise the utility efficiency by optically detecting the color of a color ink ribbon by a color detecting sensor with the ink-coated region of an ink ribbon as a detecting region. CONSTITUTION:While an emitting light of red color is passing, for example, the green or blue region of an ink ribbon 6, most of the light amount of a light emitting unit 71 is absorbed to the ribbon 6 so that the light amount which arrives at the phototransistor 7T of a photodetector 72 is small. When the emitting color of the unit 71 coincides with the color of the ribbon 6 passing the front of the unit 71 upon feeding of the ribbon 6, most of the emitting light amount of the unit 71 arrives at the phototransistor 7T through the ribbon 6, and the output of the phototransistor 7T is varied to an active level. That is, instructed color is detected. The ink ribbon 6 is fed until the region of the instructed color of the ribbon 6 arrives at the recording position of the recording head.
