PURPOSE:To enable the reading of only a part of a picture by providing at least one output part on the way of a horizontal CCD of photodetector arranged in a matrix formation, and reading out the signals of the vertical and the horizontal CCDs through this output part selectively. CONSTITUTION:The transfer of a change from a light receiving part 1 to the horizontal CCD 4, is carried out by an action similar to that in a full screen reading out. Then the output parts 5-2, 5-3 provided on the way of the horizontal CCD 4 are opened respectively, and charges with respect to the light receiving region NX3 among the changes transferred sequentially in the horizontal direction are read out from the output part 5-1. Also, charges in the part of NX2 and those in the part of NX1 are read out respectively from the output part 5-2 and 5-3. Signal charge that are not necessary to be read out are read out from the output parts 5-1, 5-3, then discharged. As a result, the charges of the part of a screen desired to be read out partially can be immediately read out, and the read time is shortened.
