PURPOSE:To control engine output considerably without requiring additional power by communicating operational spaces and a plurality of buffer chambers through check valves, gate valves and buffer chamber gate valves arranged at inlets/outlets of respective buffer chambers. CONSTITUTION:A stirling engine comprises operational spaces 4, 5, a reaction chamber 6 and a plurality of buffer chambers 8a-8n for regulating average pressure. Respective chambers are communicated through check valves 20-22, and gate valves 23, 24, 25a-25n are arranged in respective communication paths and at inlet/outlet ports of buffer chambers 8a-8n. Average pressure of the operational spaces 4, 5 and the reaction chamber 6 is regulated through control of respective gate valves so as to control output. Consequently, engine output can be controlled arbitrarily and considerably without requiring additional power.
