PURPOSE:To obtain a carbon/carbon composite material having high smoothness and excellent heat-resistance, corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance, strength and rigidity, by depositing an SiC film on a surface of a carbon/carbon composite material and impregnating SiO2 into fine cracks formed on the SiC film. CONSTITUTION:An SiC film is deposited on a surface of a carbon/carbon composite material (C/C material) by evaporation and SiO2 is impregnated into fine cracks generated on the surface of the deposition film during the cooling process. SiO2 can be left in the fine cracks by impregnating e.g. tetraethyl orthosilicate into the fine cracks and heat-treating the silicate. The surface- treated C/C material produced by the above process enables the improvement in the dimensional accuracy of e.g. a nose cap of a reusable wing-type space shuttle which is to be exposed to the most severe history.
