PURPOSE:To optionally set up a data compression ratio at the time of setting up recording time by using heads having respectively different azimuth angles always as pairs. CONSTITUTION:Heads HA+, HB+ with plus azimuth values and heads HA-, HB- with minus azimuth values are fitted to a cylinder 50 and the heads HA+, HA- are rotated with theta deg. phase difference. In a reference mode, respective heads trace the surface of a tape twice each during two revolutions of the cylinder 50 and signals are recorded by tracking the whole surface of the tape. In a twice mode, the heads HA+, HA- trace the tape twice to record a signal during two revolutions of the cylinder 50, and in a quadruple mode, signal is recorded only by one tracking out of two tracking periods of the heads HA+, HA- during the two revolutions of the cylinder 50. Similarly, threefold, quintuple modes, etc., based on the reference mode can be also set up. Thus, the recording period can be optionally set up.
