PURPOSE:To substitute a signal having a part of inappropriate exposure amounts with a signal of a picture element part corresponding to a part obtained by picking up an image with different exposure amount, and to obtain moving pictures with virtually wide dynamic range by accumulating plural video signals of different exposure amounts temporarily. CONSTITUTION:A direct output from an image pickup element 103 is herein called a through image, and signals in the preceding field that are temporarily stored in an image memory 204 are called a memory image or a memory output. Of the through image, the image of a main object at the time of halation is painted black in every odd numbered field, while the background is partial void in every even-numbered field. Since a memory image is made of signals that are delayed for one-field length, a partial void and a black painting are generated in fields other than those of a through image. Hence by suitably combining a through image and a memory image, a partial video that includes no void or black painting can be obtained. That is, in every field, the signals of a through image and a memory image are compared with a prescribed thresh old, making them '1' when larger than the threshold, but '0' when smaller in order to decide on a partial void or black-painting for every picture element.
