PURPOSE:To eliminate the need for temp. control and to improve the response characteristic of a liquid crystal to an electric field by forming a liquid crystal layer of a ferroelectric liquid crystal and using a liquid crystal exhibiting a ferroelectric smectic C phase for said light crystal. CONSTITUTION:One transparent substrate 101 has striped transparent resistors 104, an insulator 105, transparent electrodes 102, and an oriented film 103. The transparent electrodes 102 are formed to a stripe shape so as to overlap on the resistors 104. The other transparent substrate 101' has striped electrodes 102' intersecting perpendicular with the counter electrode 102 and an oriented film 103. The ferroelectric liquid crystal 108 is sealed via a spacer 107 between these two substrates. The liquid crystal exhibiting the ferroelectric smectic C phase in the service temp. range is used for the liquid crystal 108 sealed into this thermal scanning type liquid crystal element. The need for controlling the temp. is thereby eliminated and the advantage of the excellent high-speed response characteristic is obtd.
