PURPOSE:To read out characters even if a scanner is not abutted upon the character lines of a price card in the recorded order by storing read lines sequentially in a recognized result storing means, when the stored contents coincide with the contents of one unit of an original, rearranging the lines in a previously registered order to output the lines. CONSTITUTION:When the scanner 1 is abutted upon a character line of the price card, the recognized result RLINE of the line is obtained from a line recognizing means 14 and sequentially stored in a recognized line storing means 21. A line combination deciding means 22 inspects the line recognized results sequentially stored in the means 21 and decides whether the recognized results corresponding to one price card are stored or not. When the lines corresponding to one unit (a sheet) of the price card are stored in the means 21, the means 22 detects the storage and a sequence order output means 24 outputs the lines stored in the means 1 as an output ROUT in the order recorded in the price card. Even if the scanner 1 is abutted upon the price card in an optional order, the lines can be rearranged in the recorded order of the price card after reading out all the lines and outputted.
