Etherified 3-hydroxyvalerates of the formula I <IMAGE> I where R1 and R2 are identical or different and are each alkyl of 1 to 12 carbon atoms, cycloalkyl of 5 to 7 carbon atoms, aralkyl of 7 to 10 carbon atoms or aryl of 6 to 10 carbon atoms, are prepared by a process in which a 3-pentenoate of the formula II <IMAGE> II where R1 has the above meanings, is reacted with a compound of the formula III R3-OHIII where R3 has the same meanings as R2, at from 30 DEG to 95 DEG C. in the presence of a basic catalyst.
