Measurement of metal surface abrasion resistance - using measurement of force needed to cut raised fragments from surface

The measuring technique allows determination of the resistance to abrasion of the rough texture of a surface. The roughness is produced initially by use of an intermittent laser beam creating at each application a central crater and a surrounding rim. A cutting tool is applied to the surface and is then drawn over the surface at a level parallel to the surface at such a height as to remove the rims. The force needed to draw the cutting tool over the surface is measured as an indication of the resistance to abrasion. The tool is held down with sufficient weight to prevent it riding over the rime, but not sufficient to make it penetrate the main surface.
