PURPOSE:To reduce probability disabling focus detection and to surely attain focusing within a short time by detecting the level of reflected light from an object by a 1st light emission of an auxiliary illuminating device, deciding the reliability of a focus detecting signal and then executing prescribed processing. CONSTITUTION:If the quantity of light is not sufficient when an object is illuminated by auxiliary illuminating rays 6a, 6b because the object is dark, focus detection is stopped, and when a distance between the position of a photographing lens 1 and the object is long at the time of detecting a focus even if the quantity of reflected light 5a, 5b from the object is sufficient for focus detection, the low reliability of the focus detecting signal is decided and focus detection is disabled, the lens 1 is temporarily moved to a prescribed position, e.g. an infinite position, and while moving the lens 1 in a prescribed direction, e.g. to the near distance side, under auxiliary light, focus detection is executed. Consequently, the probability disabling focus detection can be reduced and focusing can be surely executed within a short time without uselessly moving the photographing lens. |
