PURPOSE:To steadily prevent occurrence of mildew by simple operation, by bringing sodium chlorite vaporizing in air, prepared by irradiating a solution of sodium chlorite with ultrasonic wave, or a chlorine dioxide gas formed from the vaporizing substance into contact with a material to be treated. CONSTITUTION:A solution of sodium chlorite which preferably has 0.1-5wt.% concentration and pH about 10-11, preferably mixed with a buffer solution and adjusted to pH 3-9, preferably 4-8 is irradiated with ultrasonic wave to vaporize sodium chlorite or further a chlorine dioxide gas is steadily evolved from the vaporizing substance and brought into contact with a material to be treated so that mildews occurring in hothouses in which mildews likely develop, bathrooms, swimming pools, toilets of houses, especially plants in hothouses are effectively removed or prevented by a simple device and easy operation.
