PURPOSE:To know the pause of a packet even when a control code is not used by providing a timer between characters at a receiving side in a asynchronous packet communicating system. CONSTITUTION:Received serial data are converted to parallel data for each character with a transmitting/receiving equipment 27, sent onto a data bus 29 and stored into a memory 25. At this time, a direct memory access unit 23 sends a data affirmative response signal to a timer 200 between characters and clears the timer 100. In this case, the timer 100 is set so as to come to be a time-over when the interval of the character data for the timer comes to be the time longer than one character interval and shorter than the interval between packets, thereby an 1.6 character interval is obtained. Consequently, the timer 100, when the pause of character parallel data comes to be the time or above of the 1.6 character, a time-over signal is sent to a microprocessor and the pause of the packet is informed.
