NEW MATERIAL:An imidazolone-benzoic acid ester of formula I (X is H, 1-4C alkyl; R<1> is H, 1-4C alkyl; R<2> is 1-4C alkyl, phenyl, R<1> and R<2> may incorpo rate to form a 5-6C cycloalkane ring; R<3>, R<4> are 1-4C alkyl). EXAMPLE:2-(5-Isopropyl-5-methyl-4-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl)benzoic acid 2-isopropy ridene-imino ester. USE:Herbicide. It shows increased herbicidal activity with high safety to crop plants. PREPARATION:For example, the reaction between a compound of formula II and another compound of formula III is carried out in a solvent such as THF in the presence of an alkali metal hydride to give the compound of formu la I.
