PURPOSE:To simply produce zirconia ceramics having superior mechanical properties by bringing a zirconia sintered body stabilized with yttria, etc., into contact with gaseous flon at a specified temp. to introduce fluorine into the surface layer of the sintered body. CONSTITUTION:A zirconia sintered body stabilized or partially stabilized with at least one kind of oxide selected among yttria, calcia, magnesia and ceria is brought into contact with gaseous flon such as CF4 at 200-1,000 deg.C to introduce fluorine into the surface layer of the sintered body. By this treatment, fluorine is substd. for about 1-6mol.% of oxygen in the surface layer and zirconia ceramics having improved electrical conductivity, corrosion and heat resistances as well as improved mechanical properties is obtd. |
