PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material for synthetic polymer, intermediate for pharmaceuticals, etc., with simple process in one step, by using an aromatic hydrocarbon having isopropyl substituent as a raw material and reacting the hydrocarbon in the presence of mercaptans, carboxylic acid, acylation agent, etc. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic hydrocarbon having isopropyl substituent (e.g. isopropylbenzene or p-cymene) is used as a raw material and is made to react at 20-150 deg.C, preferably 40-100 deg.C in the presence of mercaptans, carboxylic acid, acylation agent and molecular oxygen to obtain the objective compound. The mercaptans are e.g. nitrophenyl mercaptan of an amount of preferably 0.1-1.0mol. per 1mol. of the raw material. The carboxylic acid and the acylation agent are e.g. acetic acid and hydride of the carboxylic acid, respectively, and the amounts are preferably 0-10mol. and 2-10mol. per 1mol. of the raw material, respectively.
