PURPOSE:To recover the titled compound in high yield and purity, by adding a specific hydrocarbon solvent to a mixture of 2,4-dimethylphenol and 2,5- dimethylphenol, cooling and crystallizing the mixture to effect selective crystallization and separation of the 2,5-isomer and carrying out recrystallization using the same solvent. CONSTITUTION:A paraffinic or naphthenic hydrocarbon solvent is added to a mixture containing 2,4-dimethylphenol and 2,5-dimethylphenol (preferably a fraction produced by distilling tar acid obtained by the alkali extraction of a coal tar fraction, especially containing both compounds at a total concentration of >=85%) to separate the 2,5-dimethylphenol in the form of crystal. The crystal is added with a paraffinic or naphthenic hydrocarbon solvent and recrystallized to recover 2,5-dimethylphenol. The 2,5-isomer is useful as a raw material for pharmaceutical and polymers.
