PURPOSE:To selectively obtain the industrially useful p-isomer without causing formation of dinitro derivatives as by-products which are difficult to handle and problems of waste water and sulfuric acid, by reacting a halobenzene with a nitrating agent in the vapor phase in the presence of a specific catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A halobenzene, such as chlorobenzene, bromobenzene or iodobenzene, and a nitrating agent (e.g. nitrogen dioxide or nitric acid) are subjected to nitration reaction in the vapor phase at 100-300 deg.C, preferably 120-250 deg.C. In the process, a catalyst prepared by containing 0.5-5wt.% Mg in a crystalline aluminosilicate having at least 20 molar ratio of silica/alumina and 1-16 control index is used. The nitrating agent is used in an amount of 0.1-10mol. based on 1mol. halobenzene. |
