PURPOSE:To obtain the titled carbon fiber of low cost, outstanding in processability, bundling capability, lubricity, flexural resistance, scratch resistance, etc. because of moderately low carbonization degree, by making pitch fiber infusible followed by carbonization under specified conditions. CONSTITUTION:First, high-softening pitch is brought to melt spinning followed by introducing the resultant pitch fiber on a conveyor belt continuously into an oxidative atmosphere at 200-400 deg.C to be made infusible. Subsequently, the resulting infusible pitch fiber on a conveyor belt is subjected to carbonization in an inert gas atmosphere at 650-1,000 deg.C until its tensile strength and elongation at break become 15-150kgf/mm<2> and 0.3-5%, respectively. Thence, the resultant fiber is brought to the next process, thus obtaining the objective carbon fiber having such potential that the tensile strength and tensile modulus increase to >=160kgf/mm<2> and >=30,000kgf/mm<2>, respectively, by heat treatment at a relaxed state, also having the following characteristics: 1. specific gravity, 1.55-1.95, 2. lamination thickness Lc(002) of the graphite crystal, <=32Angstrom , 3. lane interval dooz of the graphite crystal, >=3.46Angstrom .
